Holiday DIY project

The holidays are always an ideal time to start working on a few DIY projects. It’s usually a great way to save some money but, for me, it’s more importantly the perfect excuse to put some time aside to get creative. This is a very, very simple DIY project that will help bring on the holiday spirit. It’s just about painting a few pine cones with a soft tone of gold and stacking them in a glass jar. I added a slate label secured with rustic rope. This decor item is ideal to brighten a kitchen counter (that’s where mine is right now!) but also looks beautiful atop a mantel, a shelf or on a side table in a guest’s room.

There’s so much room to get creative: you can fill a similar jar or glass vase with small Christmas ornaments, candy canes or homemade gingerbread and add them as a centerpiece on a table as well. It’s a simple concept but goes a long way to start preparing your home for the holidays.

You know, I was trying to think of something different to put on my holiday table this year – I think a couple of these would look beautiful. Great idea.

This reminds me of one of our rare Christmases (we usually celebrate only Hanukkah) when the boys were small. We bought a small tree and husband and sons gathered tiny pinecones and then bought a box of snail shells sold for escargot. They spraypainted them all gold and strung them up around the tree. It was so pretty. And we still have them 15 years later.

Jamie: That sounds beautiful – the holidays are about those kinds of memories at the end of the day aren’t they?
